About the courseware:
JVS
Learning Solutions
courseware are CD-ROM/Internet
based programs that provide workplace skills training and literacy skills
in a highly engaging, cost-effective format. All courses were developed
by JVS, a nonprofit agency that has been a leader in workplace education
and training since its inception in 1939. The goal has always been to
help its clients become economically self-reliant, productive citizens.
Now the agency's training techniques have been applied to anytime, anywhere
learning.
How it was developed
: Developed in consultation with the National Institute for
Literacy (NIFL) the National Retail Federation(NRF), and the National
Healthcareer Association(NHA).
JVS Learning Solutions
courseware is consistent
with national standards established by the National Skills Standards
Board, NIFL's "Equipped for the Future" framework and the
NHA.
Target audience:
Non-traditional learners, non-native speakers of English, at-risk youth,
unemployed and incumbent workers, dislocated workers, and workers with
disabilities
Number of lessons
in course: Each course consists of 7-10 lessons with specific
assignments and tests to reinforce learning.
Time to complete each
lesson and complete each course: For basic learners, approximately
90 minutes to 120 minutes per lesson is required. Additional time will
be needed to complete assignments or participate in optional chat room
sessions.

courseware can be used
individually in a distance-learning format, a blended learning classroom,
or in an individualized computer lab or a self-paced study environment.
Learning experience:
Instructions takes place in a "virtual classroom" that makes use of
the dynamic and real time collaborative features of the Internet and
the computer.
Additional skills
taught: Conforming
to the National Institute for Literacy's "Equipped for the Future" framework,
the program addresses such essential workplace skills as problem solving,
decision making, and prioritizing, and teaches literacy skills including
reading, writing, listening, and basic computer proficiency.
Special features:
- A seamless Internet interface
enables each student to interact with other learners as well as with
the instructor through a private chat room and bulletin board.
- Contains Spanish-English
and French-English glossaries of key terms.
Administrator functions:
- The facilitator or instructor
can monitor and track a student's progress.
- Students get immediate
feedback after taking assessments that relate to each lesson.
- Grading and coaching
become a part of the learning process through the use of interactive
messaging, which allows the instructor to add comments and grade completed
assignments.
