Four Tips To Start Your Job Search
- Know what you have to offer
- Consider all your options
- Stand out in the crowd
- Network, network, network
Losing a job is traumatic, but remember, your skills haven't changed because you were laid off. As a first step in your job search, write down your skills and strengths and weaknesses on a piece of paper.
While you are searching for a new position, don't forget about temporary or contract positions that may give you a chance to prove yourself to a potential employer and lead to a permanent job. Consider volunteering. Not only will your time and talents benefit a nonprofit in need, but volunteering is a way to develop additional skills, contacts, and knowledge.
When you apply for a job, be sure to include a cover letter. Make your letter and resume as targeted as possible, convincing the reader that your skills are a perfect match for their needs and will bring them value. Before you apply, carefully research the company by reading its website, annual reports, and news releases.
All the time, everywhere you go, any time of day or night, in any social, professional, and personal situation. You never know where you might meet your next job lead (it may be on the bus or at your nephew's bar mitzva), so don't be afraid to strike up a conversation.
